Bentonite
Bentonite is an absorbent swelling clay that consists mostly of montmorillonite, which is a type of smectite clay mineral.
Key Characteristics
Swelling Capacity
Sodium bentonite can absorb large quantities of water and expand up to eight times its dry volume. This happens due to the dominance of sodium (Na⁺) ions between its clay layers. This swelling happens because water molecules enter the interlayer spaces, forcing the layers apart.
Colloidal Properties
It forms a gel-like, viscous, and thixotropic suspension in water, making it valuable for sealing and binding.
Composition
It consists of microscopic platy grains of aluminium phyllosilicate, which give it a large surface area for adsorption.
Colour / Texture
Fresh exposures are white, blue, or green, weathering to yellow, red, or brown.
